The most popular large domestic cats in the world are:

  • Maine coon
  • Ragdoll

  • Norwegian Forest

1. Maine coon

Maine Coon, Big Cat

The Maine Coon is one of the largest domestic breeds available. It has an exceptional size, with its dense fur and a long, bushy tail. They have a vast anatomy that measures up to 16.2 inches tall and weighs anywhere between 12 and 22 pounds.

The Maine coon is a beautiful breed, contrary to its weight; this feline isn't all chubby. It's really muscular and highly social and usually gets along with everyone, even with different domestic pets such as dogs or other feline companions.

The cool thing about the Maine coon is how friendly and people-oriented this cat is. You can be able to walk it on a leash. Some Maine Coons have been reported to love to play fetch and will also retrieve small toys or balls. They can climb as well as any cat, but usually prefer to stay at ground level.

2. Ragdoll

Rag Doll, Big Cat

The Ragdoll is a strongly built breed with a dense muscle structure. It is also a long-haired cat with a sweet, calm temperament and a very kind nature. They're not much into adventure and activity, and like to spend time doing nothing.

The male ragdoll generally weighs between 16 and 20 pounds, and the female ragdoll can reach between 9 and 15 pounds. Their measurements are surprising as they can grow 15.7 inches tall and 35 inches long.

Ragdolls have good manners and are easy to live with; you'll find a ragdoll on your couch or bed. They are actually indoor cats and love people's affection. It is also great for quiet people who have a lot of time to pet.

3. American Bobtail

American Bobtail, Big Cat

The American Bobtail typically weighs between 8 and 16 pounds. American Bobtails are famous for their characteristics as a dog. They are devoted to their human affection and stand up for being very loving, affectionate, sweet, and highly intelligent.

With its short tail, tufted ears and toes, and dynamic body, the American Bobtail has a distinctively wild look. They can be comfortable outdoors and can also walk nicely on a leash. They also know how to play fetch games and other games.

The American Bobtail has an adaptable nature. In this regard, it is also a good traveler. If you're planning to go on a hike or camping with your kitty, the American Bobtail is the right companion for it. Long-distance truckers find them to be an excellent partner. The cats also have an intuitive nature and kindness, making them good family companions and suited for multiple lifestyles.

4. Savannah

Savannah, Big Cat

Savannah cats were registered as a breed in mid-2012 by TICA. This breed is a cross, or can be said more like a hybrid, between a domestic serval cat and a wild African cat. The serval is a wild cat native to Africa. The savannah is quite a big cat, especially the kitten, which can be pretty good-sized. Savannah is considered the tallest cat. The last two world record holders were the Savannah cats.

The average male savannah cat can weigh up to 13 to 26 pounds. The savannah is a challenging and rewarding companion; the savannahs have lots of energy and need physical and mental stimulation.

Not to be confused with the Bengal Cat.

The savannah is also one of the most expensive cats in the world, and also the biggest. They can be almost 23 inches tall and 35 inches long. Savannah is commonly known for spending time with its owner. If they don't get the activity they need, they may get bored and cause a commotion in your house.

5. Norwegian Forest

Norwegian Forest, Big Cat

The Norwegian forest cat can weigh up to 20 pounds or even more. They also have the nickname "Wegies," short for Norwegian. This cat has a perfect silky coat as a result of adapting to its natural environment, the cold Nordic forests.

They can grow up to 9 inches tall and 30 inches long, almost the size of a two-year-old kid. The Norwegian cat was introduced by the Vikings, who had many characteristics in common with the Siberian cat. The breed comes from the harsh Scandinavian forests.

They are probably one of the mellowest cats with adventurous spirits. They are muscular, agile, and pretty athletic. The Wegies are very people-oriented and need to have human interaction. They are highly sociable and playful, and can be great companions for your family.
