What's an Adventure Cat?

An adventure cat is a cat who explores the outdoors with its guardian/s. A cat that loves to explore and hunt in new spaces. Adventure cats are curious, active, and energetic, and enjoy spending time outside. Contrary to popular belief, they can be the perfect companions for people who love to hike, camp, or spend time in nature.

Adventure cats started gaining popularity back in 2014, but the adventure cat movement has been around for centuries! The first cat adventures were on sailboats back in the 1800s. The adventure cat community has grown exponentially in recent years, with adventure cats now living all over the world!

Bengal Cat going on Adventures

There are many reasons why people choose to adventure with their cats. I like separating adventure cat guardians into 2 groups:

Unplanned Adventure Cats

Some cat parents had cats before they chose to take them outdoors. For these cat guardians, the great outdoors is a way to bond with their feline friends and create memories that will last a lifetime.

For others within this group, it's a way to give their cat a richer life by exposing them to new sights, sounds, and smells.

These cat parents tend to be more aware of their cat's needs and are driven outdoors for the right reasons. They sometimes have a bigger knowledge gap when it comes to going outdoors and doing it safely.

Planned Adventure Cats

On the other hand, we find cat parents who chose a cat because they wanted an adventure companion. This group likes to adventure with cats because they are snack-size wild animals that let you cuddle now and then (if you are one of the lucky ones).

Adventurous cat parents are also choosing cats because they are easier to fly with and more adaptable than dogs when it comes to small spaces such as campervans and sailboats.

This group of caregivers is very aware of their own needs and what it takes to go on adventures, but might lack the skills to understand and care for a cat.

Regardless of the group you are part of, you'll find good value in this article, as I'm going to share with you what it takes to go on adventures with a cat. From choosing the right gear to understanding your cat's body language, I'll give you everything I'm going to be

What Activities can Adventure Cats Do?

Today, the main outdoor activities adventure cats take part in are hiking, road-tripping, camping, and kayaking. However, the options are endless, and adventure cats have been known to go sailing, skiing, canoeing, SUPing, and much more!

It all starts with leash walking. Just like with dogs, you need to train your cat to walk on a leash. Walking a cat on a leash may sound daunting, but it's not that difficult! All you need is patience and the right gear.

There are many different types of harnesses available on the market, and to save you some time, I created a list of the BEST Cat Harnesses.

What are the Best-Suited Cat Breeds for Adventures?

In a recent study about behavioral trait differences between cat breeds, they examined breed differences in behavior in a sample of 5726 cats in 40 breeds.

They took into account environmental factors:

  • Weaning age
  • Access to the outdoors
  • Presence of other cats
  • and Gender

The logistic regression analysis detected differences between breeds in social behavior and non-social behavior. The logistic regression analysis detected significant differences between breeds in non-social behavior.

Cornish Rex, Korat, and Bengal cats were the most active breeds, whereas British Shorthairs were the least active.

Other breeds that tend to be relatively adventurous include the Abyssinian, American Shorthair, Siamese, and Maine Coon. Ultimately, it is up to each cat to decide how adventurous they want to be, but let's review some of the traits of these prone-to-adventure cat breeds:

The Bengal Cat

Bengal cats are one of the most popular adventure cat breeds because of their love for water and high energy levels. They are known for being fearless and are often compared to dogs in their personality.

The Abyssinian

Abyssinians are the second most popular adventure cat breed. They are known for being active, playful, and curious.

The Siamese

Siamese cats are popular for adventuring as well. Their personality is social and loving, which makes them great adventure companions.

The Maine Coon

Maine Coons are another popular adventure cat breed for adventurers. They are known for being independent, but also affectionate and gentle.

Maine Coons are the largest domestic cat breed and can weigh up to 18 pounds! This makes them a little more difficult to travel with than other cat breeds.

The American Shorthair

American Shorthairs are also a popular adventure cat breed. They are known for being intelligent, curious, and active.

Regardless of the breed, some cats are content to lounge around the house all day, while others will want to explore every inch of their territory.

How do you know if your cat is an adventure cat?

If your cat loves to explore and play, is always up for a game, and enjoys spending time outdoors, then your cat might be an adventure cat!

Here are five signs that your cat is an adventure cat:

Your cat is always up for a game

Your cat is always down for a gam, no matter what you're doing. Be it chasing a toy around the house or playing tag with you in the backyard, your cat is always up for some fun.

Your cat loves to explore

Whether it's venturing into new rooms of the house or checking out the great outdoors, your cat loves to explore. If your cat is always investigating new territory, they're an adventure cat.

Your cat is always ready for a challenge.

If you've ever seen your cat take on a new toy or try to catch a bird through the window, you know that they love a good challenge. Anything and everything is a potential game for adventure cats, and they're always up for the challenge.

Your cat loves spending time outdoors.

Whether sunbathing in the backyard or chasing bugs in the garden, adventure cats love spending time outdoors. If your cat can't get enough of the great outdoors, they're an adventure cat.

Your cat is fearless.

Adventure cats are fearless, whether facing down a dog or chasing a squirrel up a tree. If your cat isn't afraid of anything, they're an adventure cat.

Do you think your cat is an adventure cat?

What do you need to adventure with a cat?

A cat is a great companion for adventures, big or small. You need some cat food, water, a litter box, and a few toys to keep your cat entertained.

Cats are independent creatures that don't require much attention, so you can focus on your adventure. Just be sure to bring your cat home safe and sound at the end of the day.

There's a lot more you need to take with you if you are going on adventures with your cat. I'll be enumerating the most important here, but for a complete adventure cat gear checklist, you have this blog post!

Cat Harness and a Leash

A properly fitting harness is an adventure essential for your cat. It will help keep them safe and secure while exploring new areas.

I have at least a dozen articles talking about how to find the right harness for your cat, so I won't go into much detail here, but you mostly need to find a harness that your cat is going to be comfortable wearing (light and minimalistic, with a snug fit) and a harness that gives you the peace of mind that your cat can't escape from. Everything else is optional.

A Portable Litter Box

Adventuring with your cat changes when you can carry a litterbox with you. Plane rides are less scary, and road trips can get much longer.

I remember the first litterbox I used with Mia was a disposable aluminium tray (the ones for the oven). It lost shape during the trip, but it was more than enough to show me what's possible.

Since then, I can't travel with Mia litter box. It's important to have a designated spot for your cat to do their business, especially if you're in an unfamiliar place.

When on a road trip or on a plane, if she has to go, she'll meow, and we've gotten to a point that I know what type of meow means business.  When it happens, I take the litterbox, set it up on a service area if we are on the road or on the plane's WC, and she can relieve herself. After using the litterbox, she goes back to being quiet and resting.

It's really a game changer.

A Carrier or a Backpack

You will also need a carrier or a backpack in case your cat gets tired or scared.

I suggest getting a carrier that has ventilation on all sides and is made of sturdy materials such as canvas or nylon.

Backpacks are a great option for adventure cats that are comfortable being carried on your back.

Our latest creation is Zeppelin, a cat carrier for air travel. It has everything you could ever need to travel by plane with your cat.

The harness is going to be available from November 2025, and we are already receiving lots of great reviews and expectations. If you have it, please leave a note in the comments sharing with us what you think about it!

Cat Treats

Cat treats are a great way to reward your cat for good behavior when adventuring. It is also a good way to get their attention when you need it.

Note that outdoors, there are competing stimuli, so the treats need to be extra special. I like to use chicken, salmon, or turkey as my adventure cat's treats of choice.

Cat Food

Make sure to bring along some high-quality cat food to keep your cat fueled for your adventures together. It's best to use the same food you feed them regularly to prevent digestion issues and consequent dehydration.

Water and Food Bowls

Your cat will need access to water and food, even when you're on the go. Bring along some collapsible bowls that are easy to pack and carry.

With these essentials, you and your cat will be ready for any adventure that comes your way. So get out there and explore the world with your furry friend by your side.

How do I train my cat to be an adventure cat?

I like dividing adventure cat training into 3 steps:

  1. Getting them used to the harness.
  2. Getting them used to the leash.
  3. Getting them used to the outdoors.

Get them used to wearing a harness indoors first. Then, once they are comfortable, introduce the leash, also indoors.

Let them explore new places around your home or the building, always at their own pace, and praise them when they show curiosity or bravery.

Encourage your cat's adventurous side by providing them with toys and activities that stimulate their natural curiosity. Don't forget the power of positive reinforcement! Reward your cat with treats or praise whenever they try something new or are interested in exploration.

With a little encouragement, even the timidest of cats can learn to enjoy new experiences.

So go forth and explore, and let your cat lead the way! After all, we should be doing this for them.

Stay Wild, Stay Safe, See You Outdoors!
